Tote bag assembly

One project you could work on at the get-away is tote bags, which we give away in the fall. We've put together instructions for you to follow once you pick up fabric kits from ESQ.

To assemble tote bags from the pieces supplied, follow the instructions below:

  1. Prepare straps from 6"-wide fabric--
    • Fold short ends under 1/4" - 1/2" and stitch for a finished look.
    • Fold fabric in half lengthwise with wrong sides together; press.
    • Open the fold and bring raw edges to the center; press.
    • With raw edges in the center, fold in half lengthwise.  Stitch along both sides through all four layers of fabric.  Finished size is approximately 1-1/2" x 25"
  2. Make the bag--
    • Stitch the side seams.
    • Fold down top raw edge 2"; press.  Fold under the raw edge 1/2"; press again.  The top hem will be finished at 1-1/2".  Don't stitch yet.
    • Place ends of the strap even with the bottom of the top hem on the inside of the bag.  Pin the ends 7" apart on each side of the bag.
    • Sew down the bottom edge of the hem, then the top edge, securing the edges of the straps.
  3. Bottom gussets--
    • Stitch about 2" to 2-1/2" from the corner point for this size bag. Working from the inside of the bag, flatten the bottom corner, aligning side seam with center bottom. Gusset stitching will run perpendicular to the side seam.
